MA Design and Computation

The Berlin University of the Arts (UdK Berlin) is both a young institution and an old one.
In 1975 – in what was then West Berlin – The “Hochschule der Künste” was created by the merger of two arts academies, the “Hochschule für Bildende Künste” and the “Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst” who had been close neighbours since 1902. In November 2001 it was renamed “Universität der Künste Berlin”.
Taking into account its predecessor institutions, however, UdK Berlin is one of the oldest Universities of the Arts in Europe, having a history of more than 300 years, going back to the founding of the Brandenburg-Prussian Academy of Arts in 1696.

FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE, MEDIA AND DESIGN

The Faculty of Architecture, Media and Design offers BA, MA and Doctoral degrees in Product, Fashion, Communication, Computation, Interaction and Architectural Design and Design Theory. Questioning and reflection on contemporary issues in Design and Art, experiment and (inter)disciplinary critical thinking are at the basis of all education and research programs and have resulted in many successful and visionary graduates over the years.
Students have access to a wide variety of workshops, digital spaces and research labs supporting the above courses on different locations.
Annually a grants program supports selected BA and MA graduates in establishing their practice after leaving the UdK.

ATTITUDE
How to deal with production and consumption? How to shape our future environment and systems and make positive contributions to it? What role can material, cultural, technical, social, craft, industrial,  digital, historic, geopolitical, artistic, scientific, economic, ecologic, poetic and personal impulses play in this?
UdK’s Product Design is rooted in ART and RESEARCH and connects with institutes as Fraunhofer Institut, or Climate Change Center around its corner. Directly linked to Product Design is the renowned Design Research Lab and Berlin Open Lab.

BA & MA
The 4-year BA programme begins with foundations in art, design, analogue and digital skills.
Each chair has a specific scope, but all focus on developing conceptual and autonomous design-thinking, applied to sustainable products and strategies for our future. Ultimately, students work independently from their own approach, utilising their skills and areas of expertise. In the 1-year Master (or 2-years adaptation) artistic, scientific and experimental directions are deepened. Product Design has intense exchange programs with befriended colleges and companies. Each year students present at (inter)national design events, win awards and find their ways as trailblasers in the field of design.
