Design Degree Program

The bachelor’s program in Design—Product and Jewelry and the master’s program in Material Culture Design offer a contemporary design education that brings together analog and digital processes, materials research, and experimental design methods—ranging from industrial products to speculative objects.

Degree Programs

Bachelor’s Degree Program in Design – Product and Jewelry

At the intersection of art and technology, students in the bachelor’s program in Product and Jewelry Design work with traditional materials, such as metals and plastics, as well as innovative, new materials. Experimenting with materials and learning about their properties is a regular part of the program. This program views design as a social responsibility, teaches prototyping as a central process of the design phase, and imparts both theoretical and practical expertise. Through sketches, models, 3D printing, and craft techniques, ideas are visualized or brought to life on various scales—from individual art objects to mass-produced goods.

Master’s Program in Material Culture Design

Since the summer semester of 2021, the Faculty of Design at Wismar University of Applied Sciences has been offering the master’s program in Material Culture Design, with specializations in product and jewelry design. Situated at the intersection of high-tech, art, and traditional craftsmanship, this project-oriented master’s program focuses on technological and ecological aspects, as well as strategic and communicative aspects, of design professions. To prepare students for today’s professional design practice, the Master’s program in Material Culture Design centers its curriculum on topics such as digital technologies, new materials, and modern manufacturing processes, as well as developments in society, art, and culture. A distinctive feature of the program is its combination of technically oriented product design and artistically oriented jewelry design. Collaboration with manufacturing companies is a key component of the master’s program’s curriculum.

Diploma Degree Program in Communication Design and Media

The bachelor’s degree program in Communication Design and Media at the Faculty of Design at Wismar University of Applied Sciences combines artistic, academic, and technical content with a focus on visual and linguistic communication, as well as communication strategies. The curriculum centers on the design and development of media while taking aesthetic, social, and economic considerations into account. Both analog techniques and digital tools are used—ranging from photography and web design to film and animation.

The introductory phase provides students with an overview of the artistic, humanities, and technical fundamentals through a structured course system.

The advanced phase is primarily project-oriented, allowing students to set their own priorities and specialize in various subject areas.
