This work understands design as a relational practice – as a space in which connectedness to ourselves, to other people & to the world can be experienced. The starting point is an explorative design process with collected materials. Working with unfamiliar matter slows down the design process & shifts the focus from efficiency towards relationship. Building on Hartmut Rosa’s resonance theory, deceleration is understood as a prerequisite for connectedness. The research culminates in a workshop format in which participants bring earth materials from places that are significant to them. These are processed into engobes & glazes for porcelain jars. The process of designing opens up space to enter into an exchange about connectedness & to become aware of the meaning of the materials, which serve as carriers of memories & relationships. The object is not the goal, but a tool.
