Description

The sustainable use of wood is becoming increasingly important in the context of the circular economy. Cascade utilization aims to use wood materially over several usage phases for as long as possible before it is recovered energetically. Along the value chain, numerous residual and by-products are created, whose potentials often remain unused. This work examines the wooden cascade from a design perspective and asks what qualities lie hidden in the materials of the individual intermediate stages. For this purpose, various material flows as well as their processing and manufacturing procedures were analyzed.

The focus is on the connection between material and process: based on characteristic residual materials, suitable processing strategies are developed in order to show new application possibilities. The results are presented in the form of five stools. Each stool represents an intermediate stage and makes the transformation visible.
