Description
The 524-page work is an intergenerational project. The starting point was the estate of my grandfather, a survivor of the Babyn Yar massacre. After his death from Covid-19, he left behind a chaotic archive of photographs and documents from the time before and after our immigration to Germany as Jewish quota refugees.
From this material, a reconstructed family archive emerged, which narrates textually and visually from the perspectives of three generations. The work provides insights into Jewish life in Ukraine, experiences of flight during the Second World War, antisemitism in the Soviet Union, and finally migration and “integration” in Germany.
The work makes experiences visible that are familiar to many Jewish quota refugees and their subsequent generations. Against the background of increasing antisemitism, it focuses on a little visible dimension of the post-Soviet Jewish diaspora in Germany.
