The Tale of Anh, Em & Chi: In 1976, the Vietnamese designer Le Huy Van designed a glass that is indispensable from the beer pubs there today and has since existed almost unchanged as a cultural asset. Le Huy Van studied (as I do now) industrial design at Burg Giebichenstein before he returned to Vietnam. “Anh, em and chi” form the siblings of this glass. They take up its typology and matter-of-factness and carry it further. Named after the forms of address for siblings, they tell of closeness, care, and social relationships.

They honor the ubiquitously popular glass and arose from a cultural exchange – between Vietnam and Germany, between two biographies that are mirrored at the same university. Le Huy Van’s perspective, lived in Vietnam and trained in Germany, meets my identity, shaped in Germany and inquiring back to Vietnam. This project serves as a carrier of memory, identity, and cultural continuity.
