‘Between Emptiness and Significance – An Interpretation of Japanese Principles of Aesthetics’ examines how aesthetics influence perception and how design can have an effect beyond the visible. The focus is on the Japanese principle of Ma, which describes the conscious space in between. Emptiness is not understood as an absence, but as an active component of meaning.
Based on this theoretical exploration, a workshop for design students was created that makes Japanese aesthetics tangible. Through observation, composition exercises, and reflection, the participants learn to use emptiness as a design tool.
Implementation takes place via a modular workshop toolkit with a box system and an application booklet. High-quality Gmund paper and continuous engravings emphasize materiality, haptics, and reduction. The project connects theory, design, and didactics, and makes aesthetics directly experiential.
