Description

The word gossip originally referred to close female friends. Later, the term was used to devalue female knowledge exchange and to ignore critical voices.

Inspired by an essay by Silvia Federici, I examine gossip and its connection with textile handicraft in text and six textiles: gossip as a collective practice of storytelling, as a network of relationships, and as a resistant strategy against the abuse of power. In a walk-in installation, the fabrics enter into a reciprocal interaction with one another, thus making various facets of gossip experiential. The work invites reflection on a form of everyday human communication and a reclaiming of the term from a feminist perspective.
