Description

How can it be that the tree fork, with its form-optimized geometry, inspires the construction of components, yet is itself chipped immediately after pruning?

The raw material for this work consists of oak branches from Berlin street trees, which are accumulated during annual tree care. Linked with the theory of granular matter, the tree forks allow a processing method that actively utilizes the branches’ own material potential: due to their Y-geometry, tree forks interlock into a moldable mass when compacted. The connection remains reversible. An interactive seating installation makes the load-bearing capacity of the tree forks tangible and conveys a radical form of circularity: the branches, which wear away gradually in one place through use, can be re-compacted in the formwork and used to create something new elsewhere.
