Description

Pairs of opposites divide the world in a more binary way. In this diploma thesis, dichotomy (linguistic division into two) is replaced by viewing it as a spectrum. This includes, for example, the gender binary, i.e. the strict division into man and woman. Gender is a polar spectrum.

The installation consists of 40 concrete cubes, each with a dimension of 10×10 cm. Each cube is created as a unique piece and has a division into two halves. No division is repeated in the same way.

The cut that runs through the cubes is the focus of the work. The space in between that results stands for the unlimited possibilities that can show themselves in a spectrum.

Different arrangements represent a rigid adherence to the binary or a spectrum. This makes it possible to contrast the fixed, dichotomous idea with a dissolved, freer view.
