Description

Re:member is an interactive installation in memory of the victims of National Socialist persecution. It commemorates the Jewish people who lived in Magdeburg before they were persecuted and murdered by the National Socialist regime. Against the background of the increasing temporal distance to the National Socialist past, the question arises as to how commemoration can be made tangible outside of traditional memorial sites.

Inspired by the Jewish custom of placing stones on graves, visitors place a stone on an interaction surface. Each stone contains an individual identification and represents a Jewish individual or family who lived in Magdeburg. After it is placed, the person’s short biography is transferred to a wall projection in the form of an animation. Re:member shows the potential of interactive design to expand the culture of remembrance in a contemporary way and to create new approaches to commemoration.
