Description

Based on an intensive engagement with pictograms, typography, and type design, the idea arose to use pictogram systems as a gateway to fundamental design principles such as reduction, consistency, and formal coherence. The aim was to offer design students a structured yet open approach to symbol design.

The starting point of the project is the smallest possible design element: the point. Via so-called “punktograms” (point + pictogram), attention is directed to fundamental questions of design, such as recognizability and the development of formal coherence within a system.

The book bundles design fundamentals, definitions of terms, and the author’s own experiments, showing how consistent symbol systems can be developed step by step. It is supplemented by an inspiration section that encourages readers to try out their own ideas. The digital design tool makes the methods shown in the book (punktograms) directly applicable.
