Description

The Spike Bench is a modular seating bench that conceptually engages with defensive design in public spaces. The focus on spikes is particularly interesting, as they are considered one of the most brutal elements of exclusion. While visually identical, they serve very different functions in other contexts.

The bench reinterprets the exclusionary purpose of spikes by referencing their function in other settings. It challenges conventional notions of accessibility and encourages reflection on the dynamics of public space — particularly regarding the lack of non-commercial seating options and the marginalisation of certain groups. Spikes are integrated as constructive elements, breaking the expected function and creating a sense of irritation. This shift in context invites critical engagement with the principles of defensive design.
