Repositioning the Mailbox as a Democratic Information Medium in Public Space

Description
With over 100,000 locations, the mailbox is one of the densest infrastructure networks in Germany. In everyday digital life, however, it has become a silent black box. This project gives it a new voice: an energy-autonomous E-Ink display with a motion sensor transforms the passive logistics box into an active democratic interface in urban space.
When a person approaches, the display inverts and signals a readiness for dialogue. In this way, local topics move directly into everyday life. Basic information can be read in simple language and without a smartphone, while a QR code opens more in-depth content.
Using the example of absentee voting, the design shows how democratic processes are communicated adaptively. Data transmission takes place via NFC during emptying, so that the proven logistics remain intact.
In this way, a dormant relic becomes a sustainable, scalable tool for social participation and trust in state institutions.
