City trips present families with children with the challenge of conveying historical and cultural content in an exciting and age-appropriate way. This bachelor thesis examines how information can be prepared for children aged eight to eleven in order to promote their motivation and cultural interest.
Using Athens as an example, a children’s travel guide was developed that uses Greek mythology to convey culture and sights in a playful and interactive way. The main Olympic gods act as narrative companions through eleven stations and encourage independent and active discovery of the city with tasks, puzzles, and stickers.
The project was based on the human-centered design process, developmental psychological principles, and an analysis of existing children’s travel guides. Two chapters were developed as examples, tested in a formative evaluation with primary school children, and subsequently revised.
