Currently, women* use Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) around 20% less frequently than men. They are also more threatened by the negative impacts of AI transformations: for instance, they are about 3 times more frequently affected by job cuts due to AI automation than male employees. The gender AI gap is therefore not only an economic risk, but above all a societal one.

Good UX/UI design for GenAI systems and correspondingly interwoven measures for building AI competencies can address and reduce the risks associated with the gender AI gap.

To this end, this thesis specifically examines the origins of the gender AI gap and its concrete impacts on women* in the context of current design science findings. The results are design-based process and research recommendations that can be used as a foundation to advance and further research inclusive and intersectional design for (generative) AI.
