Description

The repurposing of the last large inner-city wasteland below Hamburg’s central station is being negotiated as a collaborative process for housing, small-scale businesses, culture, and social infrastructure. Our design becomes a tool for participation in the city; it anchors local stakeholders in the planning process beyond established professional or financial roles. The starting point of the design was a needs assessment for future users, in which aspects such as room sizes, financing models, and usage types were surveyed. Our design was not aimed at creating the final building, but rather at structuring and facilitating the planning process. A large-scale construction board publicly and flexibly communicates the current state of discussion. A physical model makes spatial relations, tensions, and alliances visible.
