Description

Around 3.14 million Germans hold dual citizenship. This book combines two levels: In the first part, it provides well-founded information from the definition to the legal situation through to the recent reforms in citizenship law. In the second part, 20 people talk about their personal experiences, their identity, naturalization, and renouncing a citizenship.

Each interview opens with a double-exposure portrait and an introductory text, followed by the conversation itself and concluded by two object photographs that symbolically represent the respective countries of origin. Objective information and lived experience thus enter into a direct dialogue.

The project expands beyond the book: An audio compilation of the interviews makes the voices audible, a bold exhibition shows the portraits in large-format long banners and makes the topic publicly experiential.
