GrieZeil
Umgestaltung der Frankfurter Zeil
Description
The Zeil shopping street has degenerated into a pure consumption zone — unattractive, sealed off, and lacking any quality of stay. The central strip remains unused due to the row of trees, while pedestrian flows move only along the edges of the shops. Traditional shopping streets are no longer contemporary and no longer serve the purpose of a city centre.
The project GrieZeil aims to radically change this: the Zeil is to become a vibrant, inclusive urban space that puts nature, social interaction, and deceleration at the forefront. A continuous meadow with individually guided paths replaces the concrete desert. Raised seating and lounging areas, water, and planting invite people to linger.
Consumption takes a backseat — instead, community, interaction, and diversity are the focus. The historical idea of the Zeil as a promenade from the 17th century is reinterpreted as Frankfurt’s green heart, which encourages slowing down and reflects Frankfurt’s diversity.
