Description

The project explored the question: How does a discourse become visible? How can something as large, abstract, and mostly invisible as a discourse be translated into a visual form? Can discourse analysis be expanded through design?
Methodologically, the work draws on linguistic discourse and corpus analysis; practically, it applies diagrammatics and the cultural technique of flattening (Krämer 2016).
The work moves beyond ‘Design ist unsichtbar’ (Burkhardt 1981) to ‘Design macht sichtbar’ (Bürdek 2010).
It constantly shifts between reducing complexity and exposing complexity, between generating insights and communicating insights, between design theory and practice.
Over the course of the work, an awareness emerges: In the face of growing complexity, we must seek collaboration with other disciplines and approach design within broader contexts.
