Being the first person in the family to study means entering uncharted territory. Decisions that seem natural to others – which degree program fits, how an application works, or what a “good portfolio” means – can become hurdles for first-generation academics in design studies. This is because design programs also presuppose implicit knowledge, self-confidence, and access to resources.
Design Klasse wants to make these experiences visible. In addition to conversations with first-generation academics who are studying or have studied design, it includes initiatives for more equity in the design profession, creative contributions by first-generation academics, as well as resources such as scholarships and networks, and a glossary.
The goal is to create awareness of how strongly social background shapes the path into design studies, and above all to encourage people. No one should have to navigate a design degree alone, which is a matter of course for some and uncharted territory for first-generation academics.
