Description

Design is an inherently social matter. The innate intertwining of the material and the social reveals the profound influence of design on the systems of our world and does not absolve any designer of responsibility for the impact of their creations. This applies to the most complex problems imaginable, as well as the most seemingly simple.
This project is about the complexity of our world and the need for design to act within it.
One way of approaching this complexity is to think of the world as a vast, interconnected system with myriad networks and interdependencies. In this view, the design and production of any product or concept is part of, and always has an impact on, these networks, be they material, social, natural, historical or political. By examining the seemingly banal product of the door handle as a symbolic and characteristic object, these networks are exposed, examined, critiqued and contextualised in order to find new ways of designing for a world we want to live in.
