Description

In collaboration with the Shimogawa Orimono weaving mill, Coded Threads is dedicated to the material Kukuri Ito, a robust cotton yarn that plays a central role in the production of Kurume Kasuri, a traditional Japanese ikat textile. The technique is based on a resist-dyeing process in which sections of yarn are tied off before dyeing to create characteristic blurred patterns.

Kukuri Ito plays a central role here as a tool: the thread is wound around the yarn in sections, leaving certain areas untouched during dyeing. After removal, the coded pattern emerges in the fabric. In the Kukuri Ito yarn, the manufacturing process becomes visible in an abstract form. The project uses this as a starting point to explore the design potential of the material for interior applications. Coded Threads places an often overlooked by-product at the center and reinterprets traditional craft knowledge in a contemporary way.
