Description
BRANDED FOR LIFE. is a typographic book project about the Duisburg district of Marxloh. In the form of an alphabetically ordered “glossary”, it examines terms and attributions that shape the district – from poverty and antisocial behavior to solidarity and forced evictions. The aim of the work is to make the discrepancy between media representations and lived reality visible as well as to question mechanisms of urban stigmatization. For this purpose, historical backgrounds, statistical data, documentary photographs, and personal voices of residents are linked with one another. The result is a multi-layered portrait that makes visible both the consequences of poverty, vacancy, and exclusion as well as neighborhood, humor, migrant economies, and local initiatives. The project does not understand Marxloh as a symbol or a problem case, but as a complex place to live with different experiences and perspectives.
