KnowledgeGap
BildungsLücke
Name(s) of graduate(s):Emma Hille
2026
Description
Vacant department stores are exemplary of the dying of city centers. At the same time, in a society characterized by increasing isolation, there is a lack of places that enable exchange without economic exploitation constraints. Confronted with the challenges of digitalization, it is essential to strengthen media literacy and to give central space to classical education. In their mediating role, libraries already provide the appropriate infrastructure. However, they should not be thought of as quiet places for borrowing, but as open, hybrid knowledge networks.
The BildungsLücke transforms the vacant Galeria building into an open place of education and encounter. The city library and the MKZ Sachsen-Anhalt move into the former department store and create a low-threshold space for social exchange. A 9-meter city gap makes its way through the existing structure, connecting: urban space, inside and outside, and especially: people with each other.
