AURA_1989: GEGENWART WIRD VERGANGENHEIT
ERLAUBE DER GESCHICHTE MEHRDEUTIGKEIT (ALLOW THE GRADIENT OF A STORY TO EXIST)
Description
Starting from the question of what remains of an assumed East German identity 35 years after reunification, the project explores narratives of remembrance beyond the reduction to the SED dictatorship. The work aims for a multi-perspective engagement with lived realities in the GDR and examines their relevance in today’s urban space. Oral history interviews form the basis for a design intervention at the Marx-Engels-Forum in Berlin: a prototype for an augmented landscape of memory stretching across the former socialist centre of Berlin. The artefacts of East German modernism are recontextualised as carriers of subjective memories. With a view to new media formats and target audiences, an interactive form of historical mediation emerges, situated between the city, memory, and digital augmentation — creating a space for remembrance beyond binary narratives.
