A Transformation From Department Stores’ to Communal Living
Description
The conversion of existing buildings offers particular potential for reducing resource consumption and meeting the growing demand for living space. This project for the conversion of department stores into communal living space, based on the example of Galeria Kaufhof Saarbrücken, includes a concept for room partitioning and a modular façade system. The skeleton construction of the department stores allows for flexible room partitioning and the ability to respond to new usage requirements. The private spaces are separated from the communal areas by means of wooden modules integrated into the new façade. This creates exciting intermediate spaces and generous communal areas. Different facade elements and the modular structure allow for different uses and sizes of the intermediate spaces. The façade system can also be adapted to different floor plans and is suitable for the conversion of other skeleton buildings.
