What if we did not view animals merely as objects, but as beings that look at us and whose gaze crosses with ours? What if the boundaries between human and animal were to dissolve? What if our coexistence in this world were a growing together, a “becoming-with”? What if our relationship were based on mutual respect and mindfulness? I am a farrier and collect the materials hoof horn and fur during my work. Transformed into body-related objects, they stand for a “togetherness” and become a connection between human and animal. They ask who is present and who emerges from this relationship. I know every horse from which the material originates by name. They are my companions, in interconnected otherness.
