Uncovering
An Investigation of the Present
Description
Ceramics are the identity-forming feature of early cultures. What does industrial ceramic production and today's usage behaviours tell us about our identity? The project “Uncovering” uses methods of archaeology to investigate our present and question the value of banal, everyday objects. Old, unused porcelain plates are transformed into excavation sites by applying new decorations. Using grids and coordinates, pre-existing decorations are located on the plates and placed in a new context. Existing motifs fade through high firing temperatures, recede into the background and reveal something new. Plates made out of coloured clay enter into a dialogue with the found porcelain plates and reference the origin of the material taken from the earth. The grid, which is worked into the surface as a relief, acts as a connecting element between the dissimilar parts. What will people in the future think of us when our present has become past?
