Toxic Legacies
Filtering the Truth
Description
The concept of recycling has gained immense popularity as a sustainable approach to waste pollution and hass been embraced as a potential solution to our escalating environmental crisis. However, not all recycling practices – especially when it comes to plastic – are necessarily environmentally friendly. In many cases, claims of recyclability are merely “greenwashing”, a marketing strategy used by companies to position themselves as environmentally conscious without implementing actual changes in their production practices. My masters project, “Toxic Legacies”, aims to create greater transparency regarding certain forms of greenwashing. The final product line and campaign “re:cig” advertises the reuse of discarded cigarette butts in a humorous and ironic way to raise awareness of the impact this can have on both consumers and the environment.
