The Decorated Bed

Description

Ornamentation still plays a subordinate role in modern product design, despite the rich culture of ornamentation in human history. The project explores the use of ornamentation in modern design and the combination of decoration and function. The pandemic has increased the importance of the bed as a living and sleeping space. The headboard offers an upholstered back and customisable storage space for personal items. The headboard consists of two symmetrical wooden panels that hang from plastic buttons on the wall. The cushions are 70 cm long on one side and 90 cm long on the other, allowing configurations for different bed sizes. The size can be changed by turning the base 90 degrees. The ornaments in the laser-cut aluminium border – abstract shapes of the sun, moon and stars – are repeated in enlarged form on the embroidered cushions.
