Description

SOL is a concept of an autonomous solar-powered as well as long-lasting pacemaker, which replaces the voluminous battery with the help of thin-film solar cell technology and thus makes risky reoperations of battery replacement obsolete. The material properties of photovoltaic film offer enormous advantages in the medical field. These include durability, lightness, flexibility and robustness, as well as the fact that it can be printed flat on a thin biopolymer. Moreover, it not only works under direct sunlight, but can also absorb diffuse artificial light and convert it into electricity. The principle of the flexible subcutaneous implant is applied here to a cardiac pacemaker, but can also be transferred to other electronic implants.
