Schlaglicht

Description

Schlaglicht combines illustration, printmaking and urban observation into an artist’s book about the relationship between humans and the city. The book includes 66 linocuts showing people, streets and architectural spaces in Berlin. The high-contrast black-and-white language reduces the scenes to clear shapes and directs the gaze to urban structures and everyday situations of Berlin city life.

Each linocut is accompanied by a headline from Berlin news media printed in letterpress. These pick up on political, social and economic developments in the city. Image and text create open associations and room for individual interpretations. In this way, a subjective social portrait of Berlin is created.

The book was produced entirely using analog printing processes, printed by hand and hand-bound in a limited edition of 15 copies. Schlaglicht sees itself as a counterpole to the fast-paced image and news culture.
