Even two years after the pandemic, working from home has become indispensable – demand for office furniture continues to rise. At the same time, their production requires large amounts of materials and energy. Much of this remains unused after a short period of use.
This project focuses on recycling office chairs and questions existing disposal and reuse processes. The aim is to develop user-centred alternatives that make the recycling process more comprehensible and accessible through participatory design. Users are actively involved, gain knowledge about material cycles, and develop a new awareness of the value of damaged furniture. In this way, the emotional attachment to products can be strengthened, counteracting the trend towards ‘fast furniture’. The project explores the potential of this approach for sustainable furniture design in the context of a circular economy.
