Description

The design promotes walking groups and communicates that certain streets are designated school routes. To this end, objects are mounted on existing bollards and street signs that allow brief interaction and serve as meeting points for walking groups. In addition, they increase the visibility of schoolchildren by drawing attention through acoustic signals or by elevating their position — allowing them not only to see more, but also to be seen more easily.
This is playfully conveyed to children through the story of Pippo, the Bollard Pilot. Pippo is a Eurasian golden oriole, a native yellow bird who provides age-appropriate traffic education through teaching materials. Adult road users are additionally made aware of children in traffic by yellow reflective bird silhouettes placed on lampposts or signposts. These carry the same symbolic meaning as reflector animals on school backpacks.
