The World Wide Web has become an indispensable resource for seeking and accessing information. Hyperlinks make it possible to navigate from page to page in non-linear steps, forming browsing pathways that evolve and diverge with each new click. As a result, revisiting previously viewed web pages can be challenging and the utility of common web browser features such as the back button, history list, and bookmark collection often falls short in practice.
This thesis investigates how people browse and revisit information on the web, which issues they face while doing so, and which approaches have already been explored to improve their experience. Against this backdrop, it proposes combining visual representations of browsing history with granular bookmarking mechanisms. The result is “Path/waves”, an experimental browsing and bookmarking environment that enables collecting pages and fragments, exploring connections between them, and retracing the pathways within which they are embedded.
