Description

Typography in public space is an everyday phenomenon for many people around the world; today, we mostly encounter it in the form of advertisements or street signs while navigating these spaces.

But what about the kind of typography that does not dominate large areas of public life through modern reproduction techniques, but instead appears in small niches where people — either out of necessity or sometimes quite deliberately — produce it with their own hands?

Driven by curiosity, a total of 300 individual type samples were collected via Google Street View from around the world, catalogued, and compiled into a book. The goal is not only to document their occurrence, but also to invite readers to explore regional and cultural differences.

This archive is accompanied by a booklet with additional information and eight posters for reference.
