Natural Order
Approach to Gender-Sensitive Design Practice
Description
Who is responsible for household chores? Who takes care of whom? How much do we value certain actions and products in everyday life? What role does design play in this? And what does all this have to do with gender? While gender norms are being renegotiated in society and antiquated role models are losing importance, product design continues to reproduce stereotypes. The project questions the hierarchy of objects, and counter-gendered product language. "Natural Order" questions gender codes in design in the context of archetypal household objects. By playing with gender-coded product language, the appearance of irons, brooms and water carafes is restaged. Through an explorative design process, 3 critical design objects were created that question habits, work and role divisions.
