Description

For centuries, tiles have shaped our living spaces as protective and decorative elements.
In my project, this traditional object is reinterpreted in a contemporary context and expanded with a new function. The illuminated tile combines surface and light in an interactive, spatial design element made of porcelain. An ultrasonic sensor detects the distance of people and controls the tile’s response. It gently lights up, extends slightly from its frame, dims when the person moves away, and retracts again. This creates a physically tangible relationship between person and space.
The lighting effect breaks with the static glow of conventional light sources and creates a vibrant atmosphere.
Through the interplay of craftsmanship and technology, a special porcelain compound was developed that combines translucency and durability. In this way, the tile becomes an expression of living material culture, uniting technological innovation with design continuity.
