Lavo
The Rebirth of Hand-Washing
Description
In our bachelor’s thesis, we focused on the topic of ‘laundry’ and developed the speculative washing object ‘Lavo’.
While the washing machine transformed our society from a collective to an individualistic one, ‘Lavo’ reminds us that laundry used to be a communal activity. With industrialisation, communal washing was replaced by washing machines, which simplified and individualised the process. ‘Lavo’ acts as a provocative antithesis to the washing machine, providing knowledge and awareness about historical washing and encouraging a critical examination of one’s own washing behaviour. It provides a platform for social interaction and communal togetherness in an age of technological overload, isolation and alienation.
