Tradition as a resource: Ways to revive forgotten craft techniques
How can traditional craft techniques provide answers to current challenges of sustainable mobility? The project transfers the skin-on-frame construction method of the Inuit umiak into a contemporary cargo bike concept.
The result is a lightweight transport structure made of wood and metal, covered by a textile skin. Inspired by historical construction principles, the design combines material efficiency, repairability and a clear design language. Instead of relying on complex systems and constantly new materials, the concept uses existing knowledge and translates it into a modern context of use.
The project does not view tradition as a look back, but as a source for innovation. It shows how forgotten craft techniques open up new perspectives for sustainable product design and create a dialogue between cultural heritage and future mobility.
