Description
It is the moments of dialogue between designer and model within the design process that, through iterative responses to one another, lead to the creation of a product. They are improvisational in nature. From a design-theoretical and philosophical perspective, I approached this improvisational identity. This was done through a theoretical introduction, interviews with improvisation experts and an essay in which I describe improvisation as a virtue of the designer.
My practical designs include, firstly, the open-ended play Fragments of Aka. The aim is to transfer improvisational methods from the arts into product design. I allow myself to be addressed by found fragments, leftover pieces or objects on the grounds of the art academy. These serve as the starting point for an open, formal play.
In the second part of my practical designs, an extension of a power track system, I investigate how improvisational moments occur within the design process and continue to resonate in the finished model.
