HIP
A VersaTile Cooking Approach
Description
Whereas early 20th-century kitchens emphasized functionality, today’s kitchens favor minimalist aesthetics over use. As cooking spaces become increasingly seamless, we cook less than ever before — a shift carrying ecological, financial, and health-related consequences.
This insight led to HIP: a shelving system that challenges contemporary kitchen design. HIP utilizes the overlooked tile areas, creating additional workspace through seven specialized shelf designs while leaving our countertops free for cooking. No drilling is needed for hanging: each shelf hangs from two dedicated holes on the customized HIP hook, which uses a screw-based suction cup for stable yet repositionable attachment, allowing users to easily install, move, or remove the shelves according to need. The series draws inspiration from past design tendencies that perceived the kitchen as a workshop-based space, while embracing modern flexibility — inviting us to reconsider how design shapes our relationship with cooking.
