Science thrives on questioning, researching, and challenging one’s own knowledge. This master’s thesis examines how information design can communicate scientific uncertainty in a reflective manner. I approached it through the aesthetic phenomenon of blurriness – which is considered a medium of reflection in art and an expression of authenticity in photography, as it is capable of depicting exceptional states of reality. Parallels arise with the scientific process of knowledge acquisition, because data always carries within it the perspectival traces of its production and research situation.

Implemented as a blur-conscious visualization in the installation »Degrees of Approach«, the viewing perspective here becomes the interface – changes in position unlock different levels of knowledge, and the distance to the data modulates its level of detail. This enables sensory access to autographic climate archives and the gradual reconstruction of climate change.
