Description

As my thesis, I have developed an illustrated non-fiction book entitled “Fukushima Stories”. The book shows a different perspective on Fukushima (Japan), beyond the negative headlines. It combines information on the 2011 disaster with interviews, personal experiences, as well as illustrations and collages that bring the everyday world of the people and the culture and nature of the region to life. The aim is to offer readers a nuanced approach to Fukushima: as a region full of tradition and scenic beauty – and at the same time as an example of resilience. The basis of the project is my one-year study visit to Fukushima. I also studied East Asian languages and cultures, which gave me the academic background for the work and the necessary contacts. In the thesis, I initially translated and illustrated three interviews, but would like to implement even more for a publication in the future.
