Description

Faux Florals is an interactive design tool that bridges the gap between the craft of cement mosaic casting and digital design. The combination of these two techniques creates an aesthetic that connects the digital pixel look with the vibrant colors of natural pigments and the material properties of cement casting.

The production of cement tiles differs fundamentally from the design of common ceramic tiles. They are not printed or painted afterwards; instead, the motif is cast. A separate casting template is therefore required for each motif. By adapting the pixel representation logic of digital design as a grid-shaped template for the motifs developed for the project, a multitude of 15×15 pixel images can be generated instead of just one image. With the graphics tool, individual motifs can be generated based on the pixel manipulation of images. The design can then be seamlessly implemented as a mosaic.
