Description

The starting point is the hypothesis of colour aversion in design fields: a reluctance towards colour and insecurity about its use often lead to a limitation to the achromatic spectrum. Awkward use of colour can easily ruin everything.

The first part, ‘Overview’, examines the state of colour theory in design programmes in Germany. A total of 156 design degree programmes were analysed for keywords related to colour.

The second part, ‘Retrospective’, briefly explores the historical causes of today’s colour aversion and the supposed inferiority of colour compared to form.

The third part, ‘Colour Conversations’, contains interviews with colour instructors from various disciplines: product design, media design, communication design, interior architecture, architecture, and restoration.

The fourth and final part, ‘Outlook’, presents approaches for updating contemporary colour education.
