Menstruation and sexual education are still taboo topics in South Africa. This concept was developed in four workshops with women seeking refuge in women’s shelters in South Africa and provides an opportunity for an easily understandable education on the menstrual cycle for women and girls. Different elements are used to clarify the situation: 1. by integrating a design workshop as an integral part of the educational programme of women’s shelters in South Africa, 2. by means of an analogue cycle calendar for women and 3. by means of a children’s book for girls. The aim is for women and girls to feel safe in their own bodies when they are unable to do so in their own environment. Because the political situation and the lack of respect for the female sex do not guarantee the safety of women there.
