Elementum
Form durch Spannung
Description
Elementum is a design that exemplarily explores a method for the three-dimensional deformation of wood. The wood is shaped solely through tension — without the use of steam bending or lamination. The focus of the design lies in testing and evaluating this method, demonstrated through the example of a lounger.
A ‘stadium-shaped’ piece cut from wood forms the frame for a textile seating and reclining surface. The frame is shaped using tension straps, mounted onto a metal base, and then covered with fabric. After assembly, the covering and the frame hold the wood in shape — the straps are no longer needed. The curves of the frame arch upwards and visually trace the tension. In this way, the flat wooden frame becomes a volume.
This construction makes it possible to pack and transport the lounger flat. The lounger offers space for two people and, thanks to its curved shape, provides a comfortable headrest.
