Digital Manufacturing Techniques in Interaction with Traditional Ceramics
Description
The separation of traditional crafts and industrial production is increasingly being broken down through the use of digital technologies, as many craft businesses are also using those technologies to optimise their production processes. The work “digitile in detail” examines the new design possibilities that arise from the connection between craft and industry by considering digital manufacturing processes as an integral part of the craft work process. Specifically, the production of tiles and the use of a CNC laser to engrave detailed patterns in ceramic material will be explored. Due to variation in the tiles and different parameter settings of the CNC laser, different approaches and methods can be demonstrated. Three tile images were developed, each demonstrating a different method and presenting it in a larger context.
